With the U.S. Naval War College, the AABP is planning to sponsor the World War I baseball game at Cardines Field in Newport, Rhode Island, on the Fourth of July 2018. This historic park is ranked as one of the best facilities in America for summer collegiate baseball. It’s the home of the Newport Gulls of the New England Collegiate Baseball League.
First known as Basin Field, the site was used for sandlot baseball as early as 1908. The George S. Donnelly Sunset League began playing there in 1919. The City of Newport bought the field in 1936. The ballpark is named for U.S. Army Private Bernardo Cardines, Newport’s first battlefield casualty of WWI.
